Warning: Easton School Brag Ahead

Photobucket
Last night was Easton's parent-teacher conference for kindergarten. I have mentioned that his teacher is pregnant and she'll be leaving for the rest of the year once her baby is born. Because she'll be gone when the rest of the school does conferences, she did hers early. We also got to meet her replacement who greeted us with "Oh you're Easton's parents?" Ummmmm, what'd he do?

She must've noticed the looks on our faces because she launched into, "It's good. It's good..." and told us how she'd been in there observing a few days and they hadn't introduced her yet. She came to help Easton with something and he asked her, "So why do you keep coming in here every day anyway?" She assured us she thought it was hilarious. Not rude. After that, they decided "hey, we should probably introduce her". I guess once they did, they were again amused by the look on Easton's face...like "Oh crap!" perhaps realizing maybe he would've liked to start over again with that first impression. :)

But they carried on about Easton (who was at home with Lauren and his siblings) and how enjoyable he is to have in class. I'm sure they say such things to all the parents, they were just really selling it to us. They were talking about his sense of humor and how it's somewhat dry and maybe a more mature humor than they're used to seeing in 5 year olds and they seemed to really like that about him as they shared funny stories and little anecdotes about things he says and does in class. I knew he wouldn't be class clown (Dalton might, though!) but I'm glad to know he's got an appreciated, not-as-disruptive sense of humor of his own.

She had these things to say as well:

I was so glad to hear this stuff. Even when we ask very specific questions about his day, we don't get a lot out of him about what he does while he's gone. I was telling Jason I kinda think E doesn't want us to know what he can do, so that maybe we won't expect much of him at home. And yes, I believe he's smart enough to use that kind of strategery. ;)

He's been doing great about going to school lately. It was rough at first as he was getting used to things, I think. But now he gets up and dressed without a fuss. He no longer whines about how all they do is cutting and tracing. I'm so glad! That was something I'd certainly been praying about and regretting our decision to send him to the local public school instead of having him tested for the gifted and talented charter school or somehow finding the money to keep him at the private school he did preschool at. I'm feeling much better about it.

So in other conference news, she shared the results of Easton's September 1st assessment testing with us. He did well all around scoring at an "advanced" level in what he was being tested on. Take a look at this:

See that "B" to the left above 28? That's where they expect the incoming kindergartners to be at the beginning of the year. The "K" above 82 is where they want to have them by the end of the year. And the "94" is where Easton was at on September 1st! He's already grown in his abilities in this past month since testing took place. So so proud of him! He's finally starting to openly read a bit more for us now. Part of it is homework, they bring home a simple story every night that they have to read us. But he's also reading stuff from the library now too. He's writing sentences to go with pictures he draws. I'm loving seeing him grow.

He did well on his math assessment also but it wasn't quite as impressive as his one above. They want the kids to be at 90 at the end of the year for that and he's already at 65 there.

One thing I was excited about was homework. But the stuff they're currently bringing home is so stupid. He has to write his name a bunch.

Lame.

Each week he also has a rhyming activity that we instead do with Dalton too. Like rhyming bingo:

Really??? Easton was rhyming even before preschool, like most kids we know. Are there really 5 year olds that can't rhyme? Hmmmm.

They also have a simple "math" activity which is really just numbers, not "math". But oh well. I'm itching for the work to become a little more challenging just so I can see for myself what Easton can do as he can be so private about his abilities. Why can't he be a show-off like his mama was? :)

I'm hoping I can get into the classroom before too long to volunteer. It's been hard for me not knowing any of the kids in his class or their parents. Or even how their day goes. I'll have to find somewhere for the other two to go while I'm with Easton's class. Hopefully soon! I also found out I'll get to chaperone their field trip later this month. Yay! Again, that's assuming Lauren can get the day off to watch the little two for me.

Just wanting to update you all on how much better school has been going for Easton...and of course, bragging rights about his test scores. :)

I will leave you with something he brought home from art class yesterday:

Those are awesome test scores. A huge pat on YOUR back because you have homeschooled him up til now :-) The preschool did some but it is everyday life in a relaxed environment that they learn so much. Hopefully volunteering will help you feel a little more connected.

WTG E! Sounds like this teacher will have her hands full keeping E challenged and growing =)

FWIW, Avery has always excelled academically but was a 5 year old that couldn't rhyme! It was seriously so hard for her--it blew me away.
