So, when he woke up from his nap still quite feverish despite having "fever reducers" on board we decided I'd take him to urgent care. It's 100% covered by our insurance, so why not?
We left just before 3 and got to the Children's Hospital satellite urgent care. I've taken Easton there before too. We had a bit of a wait and then they took us back. Of course they made sure to notice and ask about the black eye he's sporting...not sure if I mentioned the accidental head butt from Easton last Wednesday that caused it. Oh well.
Dalton wet his diaper for the first time since he was changed at 9 this morning while we were waiting for the doctor to come in. He also had some lovely neon yellow green diarrhea. Double whammy!
You can see his black eye and his hatred for his I.D. bracelet here:
Checking things out before he messed his diaper:
Waiting for the doctor:
The provider (who turned out to to be a pediatric nurse practitioner) came in and checked him out...looked in his ears, cleaned out some wax but then determined they looked okay, she listened to him, peeked in his mouth and throat, listened to my little history report on him and she decided we'd better check his urine for a UTI. This would involve a catheter.
Poor baby.
My boys are both "intact" and in Dalton's case he required some retraction in order to get the catheter in, had I really realized forcible retraction was their plan, I probably wouldn't have okay'ed it. One of the two nurses doing the cath was like, "Is it usually difficult to retract?" and I was all, "We don't retract it!" Because dude, you're not supposed to. Dalton did not find that part easy at all. My poor, sweet boy. I really really pray there is no permanent damage from what happened today (and yes, permanent damage is technically possible).
Then came the cath which wasn't fun for him either. But they got their sample and went to do a dipstick on it. Dalton conked out in my arms after all that trauma.
P.N.P. came back...no signs of a UTI although he was a bit "dry" he was not suffering from acute dehydration or anything.
So as she went on saying things like, "Maybe we could do a chest x-ray because of his recent cold" I was all, "No". And then she was like, "Because he hasn't had his fever that long" and I said, "I promise I don't freak out over fevers. It's just that this one and this illness seem different and if it was his ears or throat or something I couldn't evaluate I wanted to know on the sooner side." She then said, "Well, I wouldn't mind looking in his ears again" since D was asleep. He woke up when she was looking but she still said, "You know, now that I'm cranking on them they are red. Let's give him antibiotics for a double ear infection."
Darn her!
I'm not convinced it's even his ears to begin with after her first peek revealed healthy ears. But dude, if it was gonna be his ears all along then I'm real pissed that they had to go hurting his little willie like they did. :(
He has his 15 month well-baby check on Thursday and I'll be anxious to talk to our real doctor about it all.
Okay, the boys are in bed, let's hope Dalton has a slightly better night, eh? I'm off to go buy an ear thermometer. I'm through torturing sweet Diddles with the armpit temps. He is so not a fan.

2 thumbs down on that Urgent Care experience.
I totally cringed when I read what they did to lil D. OUCH! I'm sure that was unbelievably hard to watch...poor baby.
Hope the antibiotics do some good. Feel better soon Diddle!
Poor little Dalton. What a horrible day. As I was reading about what happened, I kept getting flashes of when Ranen had to have a spinal tap. I just feel for him being in the urgent care and having to have a cath.
Oh my goodness, poor guy!! Ugh, I really hope he starts to feel better and he doesn't suffer any permanant damage!!
OH NO!!! Poor baby D!!! I am so sorry! I hope he feel better soon!
Love, Cori
Why do people think retraction is as normal as brushing hair or something?! Poor DiddleB! I hope he gets better soon! He looks really cute diddling around the room though, even with his black eye :)
That's just horrific! Poor, poor babe! Oh and the cath, ouch, that is the ONLY medical procedure that would make Jakie cry.
Oh no! Poor Diddles. That sounds just awful. I hope the ABs work. I wish you lived close enough to take him to my ped.
Yikes and double yikes. Poor little guy! I have alot to catch up on (bear with me)
OMG, I am so pissed with the nurse practioner. Oh man Krisitin, if it were me I would probably say something to the doc at that clinic. I can just imagine how infurated you were with her. I remember all to well how horrible it is for them to get cathed. I am already dreading next month when Grace has to get cathed for her kidney test. But then not only the cath for D but the retraction too and then for you to find out it was avoidable. Grr..
Oh my, so sorry to hear about all that urgent care trauma. Poor little diddles. You sounded like you held up well. I would have been a real mess with all the forceable retraction stuff. Has Dalton verbalized any thing about it hurting down there? I bet it will all turn out fine...but still all the stress of watching your little baby have to go through all that- bless your heart.
