Yesterday morning at about 3:30 I woke up in terrible pain. The only pains I can think of that have woken me from a dead sleep are cramps in my calves when I'm pregnant, my liver about to explode as well as my head when I developed HELLP, and now this...ear pain.
I got up as there wasn't a chance I could sleep. I checked when the urgent care clinics would open and I looked at some home remedies online. But the pain kept getting worse so I said, "To heck with it..." and I decided to take myself to the ER. I doesn't cost us any money (thank you, Microsoft!) and rather than wait 4 hours for urgent care to open I wanted those numbing drops ASAP as well as the resources to check with an OB to make sure anything I would be prescribed was okay. So I headed to the hospital where they have to have OBs around instead of moaning and writhing my way through 4 hours just to go to a free standing urgent care clinic.
I apologized for coming in for what I thought was an ear infection but they were perfectly sweet to me. Sure enough, it is an ear infection but the trend these days is to wait on antibiotics so that's what they recommended for me as well. I have a cold, which is a virus...so my ear infection likely wouldn't be helped a lick with the antibacterials. Also, about 90% of ear infections go away rather quickly on their own without any meds. So...that's the route we went too. However, I did need something for the pain. The normal numbing drops are an "unknown" during pregnancy...ear infections are so uncommon in adults to begin with and so they certainly haven't found anyone willing to volunteer their fetuses to test the drops...so my OB said no. And ibuprofen is a no-no at this point in pregnancy as well. That leaves narcotics. I know it sounds crazy but it's true. They gave me Vicodin. In a normal adult they'd also suggest decongestants to help relieve some of the pressure in the Eustachian tubes...but again, they advised preggo me to stay away from that as well. Vicodin it was.
I popped two as soon as I was on my way home...I was close enough where they wouldn't take effect yet (and affect my driving abilities) but I was wanting them to start acting soon.
We decided against trying to go to church because I was holding an old sock full of hot uncooked rice against my ear. I contemplated throwing it into a dress sock to fancy it up for church but with the two Vicodin on board I wasn't able to be upright for too long.
Jason let me catch up on sleep and just totally took over with the boys all day. He was amazing. Easton was amazing as well. He kept offering to reheat my rice pack in the microwave. He went to a birthday party and the second he came home he asked, "So how have you been feeling? Do you want me to heat this up again for you?" How precious is he???
Today I was feeling rested and pain-free enough for Jason to go in to work, but that was of course with the aid of a Vicodin (I never took two at once again after how woozy it made me). However, without thinking I took the Vicodin on an empty stomach and paid for it later, throwing up and I've been nauseated ever since. Ick. Plus I think the Vicodin makes me tired. I was snoozing on the couch while the boys watched the new Wubbzy.
Then my thoughtful little man decided he was going to make lunch for everyone. I told him that I wasn't hungry because I still felt a little sick but he could make lunch for him and Dalton...so he did.
He decided he needed to put on his apron which was a party favor at the birthday he went to yesterday (how cute is that??? they made their own pizzas!):
Then he said, "Oop! I forgot to wash my hands!" and ran and took care of that before getting out two plates and setting out crackers and opening up a couple of string cheeses for himself and his brother:
A short climb up the pantry for a box of raisins...
And lunch is served!
Dalton can climb into his seat but can't snap the tray on...so big Bubba helped him:
And they blessed their lunch:
And I thanked God for my little blessings.

Oh I hope you feel better. I got an ear infection when I was pregnant with Garrett and it happened during a growth spurt. So due to the normal pregnancy swelling my Eustachian tube couldn't drain. I had that ear needs to pop feeling for 2 months. And 30 minutes after I had my section it went away. LOL!
They are both SOOOOOO precious if I do say so myself. I am getting all choked up. Feel better sweetie. Moo
You're so funny with the "antibacterials". Always proper.
You can't even take Benadryl as a decongestant? I was always allowed to take Benadryl when pregnant.
And TWO vidocin? Wow-wee. Even when I've been post-op, I can't take more than a half of one at a time.
Your boys are so sweet!
That big brother just makes my heart melt. He is the greatest big brother...and kid in general!
I sure hope you are feeling back to your perky self soon :)
That ear infection sounds nasty. I hope I never get one. I hope it goes away quickly. Tough being sick or hurting when pregnant because you are so limited.
Easton is the man! He was so sensitive as always and so responsible making lunch. Way to go E!
sorry about the ear infection. YOUCH!
I love that Easton made lunch with an apron on. Too darn cute. I need to start making lunch with my apron on ;)
This was the cutest post ever! How sweet are your boys?!
Whoa, look at all these comments! Easton sure has won all of us over, hasn't he? :)
Super, duper sweet that he made lunch for him and his brother. Reminds me of the time you were sick and in bed (or on the couch?) and he tried so hard to help take care of you. He's a nurturer for sure and I love it!
So sorry about your ear issues. Drew had a horrible day today with his (and I know it was his ears because he quit crying everytime I put my finger in his ear). So I hope yours does not follow the same trend of getting worse before it gets better.
And that is strange they are saying no to Benadryl. I was also able to take it while pregnant.
WOW! Tons of comments! I just wanted to add. The Dr. told me the same thing with my ear infection....to hold off the antibiotics (I went in on a Monday), by Friday I still wasn't any better so I went back and they gave me some. I have been on them now for 4 days and am finally starting to feel better, seems like I've had this cold (and ear infection) FOREVER! Good Luck and I hope you feel better soon!
I cannot take Vicoden. I have to do like Kyla and take a half, and even then I feel so sick. I usually stick with Darvocet.
Hope your ear feels better :)
